Oh BOY! Sorry it’s taken SO LONG to get this video out! The weather has been getting warm and BEAUTIFUL in March and April this year, and all I want to do is hang out in my garden! I’ve been busy planting beans, cucumbers and other summer vegetables, but I wanted to take this time to talk about the importance of flowers in the vegetable garden.

When I first became a vegetable gardener, I thought flowers were a waste of space. Sure, they’re beautiful, but I can’t eat them! Well, I’ve learned over time I was VERY wrong. Adding flowers to your garden adds beauty, creates a habitat for beneficial insects and helps complete your garden ecosystem. Biodiversity is so crucial for your garden (and the planet!) you should do everything you can to bring diverse plants into the area (as long as they aren’t invasive!) And who knows, you might find your new favorite plant, bug or bird when they come by to check out the new digs! Plant MORE flowers this year, I promise you won’t regret it!

Oh, and how are my citrus trees doing? Well, judge for yourself! They haven’t grown much in size, due to planting them at the beginning of their dormant season, but this spring they put on flowers and I think they’ll be well prepared for the harsh Phoenix summer. See the original video here

Also, SURPRISE! I added two pomegranate trees to my garden this year as well. Pomegranate trees are a great addition to a desert garden. They are extremely drought tolerant and love sun and heat. They’re super resilient, and of course provide wonderful (get the pun?!) POMEGRANATES! I’m looking forward to the shade they will provide and their highly nutritious fruit. Thanks so much as always for joining my on my garden journey. If you have any questions, ideas or comments, leave them below! I love to hear from you! Have a great SPRING season!!
